Mayor of London Fourth plinth unveiling
The Plinth is in the northwest corner of Trafalgar Square. It now displays a series of temporary artworks commissioned from leading international artists. It is one of the most-high profile and successful public art programmes in the world. This tender relates to the 14th commission Antelope by Samson Kambalu. The unveiling is the first time the press and public will be able to view the artwork in full-size form.
The artwork: Antelope takes the form of two bronze figures. The figures represent John Chilembwe, a Malawian, pan Africanist killed by colonial police in Malawi in 1915. The second represents European missionary John Chorley an associate of Chilembwe. Both wore hats, at the time, however black Malawians were not permitted to wear hats in front the ruling classes.
Due to the nature of the artwork, the hat was to be a feature as the main design. Invitees for the unveiling were also encouraged to wear a hat. Working closely with the events and digital team as well as the artist - who had commented on the route chosen -”The flag hat is great - discerning interpretation of Malawi flag and allusion to pan Africanism. It has its own thing going too, rather merely illustrating”.
